South Film Industry superstar Surya’s first film in 2025 has released in theatres. Surya and Pooja Hegde starrer Retro released on Thursday.
Visuals from across Chennai showed fans thronging the theatres for the morning show of Retro. Bollywood film ‘Raid 2’ earned less than Retro.
Retro Box Office Collection Day 1
According to early estimates from industry tracker Saccanilk, Retro had a fairly housefull opening. On the first day, the film grossed around Rs 19.25 crore on its opening day across all languages. Currently, Surya’s film has outperformed its main rival Nani-starrer ‘HIT 3’ and Bollywood film ‘Raid 2’ at the box office. HIT: The Third Case grossed around Rs 18.00 crore across all languages on the first day.
About Retro:
Retro (2025) is a Tamil action-romance film that follows Paarivel “Paari” Kannan (Suriya), the adopted son of a feared gangster, Thilakan (Joju George). Paari dreams of leaving behind his criminal past when he falls in love with Rukmini (Pooja Hegde), a veterinarian. However, his attempt to escape the underworld is disrupted when Thilakan demands the return of stolen gold, leading to a violent confrontation.
Paari is imprisoned, and Rukmini disappears from his life. After five years, he tracks her down on Black Island, a mysterious place ruled by a tyrant. As Thilakan and other enemies close in, Paari must fight for his freedom, his love, and his redemption.

Nani Starrer Hit 3 Office Collection
In terms of viewership, Retro had a total 79.91% occupancy among Tamil audiences on the first day. Nani’s film saw a total 47.08% occupancy among Tamil audiences on Thursday. However, Retro got more screenings in Chennai than Hit 3. Chennai leads with the highest number of shows and occupancy for Retro with 924 shows. Hit 3 got only 69 shows in Chennai.
Hyderabad on the other hand showed more screenings for the Nani-starrer than Suriya’s latest release for Telugu audiences. Retro had a total 39.25% occupancy on Thursday for the Telugu version, while Hit 3 saw a better turnout with 85.97% occupancy among Telugu audiences on the same day. Bollywood film Raid 2, on the other hand, grossed around 18.25 crores in India across all languages on the first day.
Retro Starcast
Retro is the first collaboration between director Karthik Subbaraj and Suriya. It also stars Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar and Prakash Raj in lead roles. Shriya Saran has made a special cameo appearance in the film.
Hit 3 Starcast
On the other hand, Hit 3 is directed by Sailesh Kolanu. It is produced by Prashanthi Tipirneni and Nani under the banner of Wall Poster Cinema and Uninus Productions. The star cast of this Nani starrer film includes Adil Pala, Rao Ramesh, Brahmaji and Maganti Srinath in lead roles. Both the films are released on May 1.
